Giant Eagle Chooses TMW Systems

Giant Eagle, Inc., a Pittsburgh-based supermarket chain, has chosen TMW Systems, the leading developer of enterprise solutions for the North American transportation industry, as their logistics software provider. Giant Eagle will use TMW's base system, TMWSuite™ as well as several add-on modules, to help manage their five retail support (distribution) centers in Ohio and Pennsylvania, which service 214 stores throughout western Pennsylvania, Ohio, north central West Virginia, and Maryland.

After investigating several software packages, Giant Eagle selected the TMW system as a result of the need for real-time visibility by all support centers and the ability to allow information to be centralized and managed from one location. "There are opportunities to recover revenue lost due to lack of supply chain visibility," said Giant Eagle Vice President of Logistics Bill Parry. "With the TMW system, we gain close to real-time visibility of all support center activities, allowing for reductions of empty miles and proactive pursuit of revenue."

Giant Eagle chose TMWSuite for its ability to integrate with other systems used in Giant Eagle's logistics process, such as Manugistics and Qualcomm. "TMW allows us to analyze data from our various systems and focus on the exceptions," said Parry.

"With a fleet of 350 trucks, it is not practical to examine and route every driver, every day. With TMW, we can address only the exception situations, and we can do it real-time."

In addition, the TMW Systems will assist in maximizing the efficiency of billing functions, especially where third party carrier billing is concerned. In the past, Giant Eagle tracked third party carriers separately, which required extensive verification that information given by the drivers was accurate. With TMW, Giant Eagle will have the ability to pay off of its own invoices and track miles within the system, thus decreasing the room for discrepancies.

Another key benefit of the TMW system was its reporting features. "TMW allows us to take easily access actual information and create concise reports, rather than having to deal with burdensome spreadsheets and averages. With the TMW reporting," said Parry, "the system users have the ability to create and generate reports in an efficient operational format, rather than offering a couple of canned reporting options."

Giant Eagle is still in the process of launching the complete TMW system, with a pilot test scheduled in the near future. "TMW offers a great product that presents a strategic fit to our ongoing operations," commented Parry. "TMW has accommodated all of our deadlines, and up to this point, we are very pleased."
